Bamboozle – Oriental Fusion Kitchen & Bar – Philip Kraal’s Sumner restaurant and bar may not at first glance look good for veggies, but there are numerous options for vegans. Philip does not like to adapt dishes or do anything off the menu for special diets, he is known for being ‘temperamental’. However, there are plenty of veg menu choices so no need to ask for adaptations, and the wait staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful to vegan customers. Recommended dishes are the ‘Cocaine rice’, the ‘Wet Chubby noodles’ (Fat noodles with vegetables, steamed silk tofu and pickled cucumber), ‘Stin ke po’ -Crunchy shredded potato and apple salad with fried chilli-marinated silk tofu (made in-house), seasoned with black vinegar dressing, to name a few. Buddha Stix – busy contemporary Asian fusion (Thai/Vietnamese etc) dining in trendy restaurant with a bar. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options and helpful staff. Open 7 days for lunch and dinner. 74 Riccarton Rd (city end) ph 961 1704

Cookai Gold Fusion Cuisine – Contemporary fusion Japanese cuisine with lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Vegetarian manager who is very helpful and will do a special veg menu for groups who pre-book on request. Modern décor. 493 Papanui Rd, Papanui, ph 3668688. Mon-Sat 5:30pm-11:00pm, Mon-Fri 12:00pm-2:00pm

Dose Cafe – The coffee comes from the Lyttelton Coffee Company and the japanese menu has several delicious vegetarian or vegan options. Chefs even take special care to not cook in the same oil that meat is cooked in if you say you are vegetarian. 77 Tuam Street. Mon – Fri 7.30am – 4pm, Sat 8.30am – 4pm.

Five Stars Vietnamese Restaurant –  Great veggie options with lots of tofu on offer in this suburban mall setting. Inexpensive generous dishes include fresh rice rolls as an entre ($8), tofu with lemongrass and chilli ($12) and fried rice noodles with tofu ($10). Large portions, fresh food, no problem if you ask for no fish sauce or egg. Good for vegans and gluten free. Fully licensed – BYO (wine only).Takeaways available. Opening hours: 7 days 11.30am,-2.30pm / 5pm-10pm Shop 8 Fendalton Village cnr Clyde & Ilam Rd. Ph 351-7178.

Koi Sushi and Gallery – They always have good veg options during the day, and every second Thursday they run a vegetarian sushi night which is usually all vegan. $10 to fill a container or $15 for a large container. Huge variety of sushi and other Japanese treats such as dumplings and miso soup. Shop 6, 114  Marshland Road, Shirley (next to Liquorland). Rangoon Ruby – Burmese cuisine with excellent vegan menu including their famous tea leaf salad and a tamarind sorbet for dessert. Dinner is around $25-$35. One of the most popular restaurants in town so do book ahead. Open Mon-Sat: 17:30 – 21:30.  819 Colombo St, Christchurch.  ph 0220280920

Sema’s Thai Cuisine – Arguably Christchurch’s best Thai restaurant, Sema’s is tops for vegetarians too. The staff are knowledgable about what vegetarians can and can’t eat and they have the biggest vegetarian menu of any Thai restaurant we know of in Christchurch. Very reasonable prices. Always book your table as they are busy every night or just pop in for a takeaway.
